Obituary of Rupert Phelan

Rupert Hazelton Phelan

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Rupert Phelan, aged 81, on December 23, 2024. A loving father, grandfather, teacher, and friend. Rupert lived a full life filled with love, laughter, and a passion for education and travel.

Rupert is survived by his daughters Linda Nyman and Sheila Phelan-Mondor, and his grandchildren Mitchell and Catherine. He will be missed by his girlfriend Judy, and the mother of his children Catherine.

He was a cherished brother to Jenny Chenier (Mike) and Melvina Phelan and was predeceased by his parents Hazelton Phelan and Dolarena (nee MacDonald), and his brother Francis Phelan.

For over 30 years, Rupert devoted his career to teaching accounting at Arnprior District High School, leaving a lasting impact on countless students.

Rupert was a man of many interests and talents. An avid skier, golfer, squash player, and track and field coach, he loved staying active. His passion for home renovation and antique cars kept him busy in his spare time, while his love for travel allowed him to explore the world. He was also a regular player of duplicate bridge, where his sharp wit and competitive spirit shone. He volunteered at the Ottawa Hospital and was a strong supporter of Amnesty International.

Rupert's infectious sense of humor and zest for life touched everyone he met. He will be fondly remembered for his warmth, generosity, and the joy he brought to his family, friends, and students.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Queensway Carleton Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion. A celebration of Rupert's life will be held in the spring – details will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson Foundation and the Heart Institute.

You will forever be in our hearts.
