I remember Uncle Dudley as a calm, cool, collected presence and am saddened to hear of his passing. I still have photos that he took before my prom which I appreciate greatly. I'm sorry to have another funeral to attend near Toronto today, but am thinking of you all. I would like to have been there to see all of you and share some memories.

Dudley and I shared a common birthdate and were cousins through the Hethrington/Wade line. After 82 years, we finally met this past November. The genealogical information and photos that we shared over the years are priceless. Mount up with those new wings, free from the troubles of this world, and we will meet again.

Dudley Fraser was the definition of a fine gentleman and scholar. I first learned of Dudley from my Great Uncle Arthur Hethrington who was another man with a passion for our family history. Together these two men set me on my life’s work. For that I thank them both.
Dudley and Arthur loved researching their shared family history. They in turn passed their knowledge onto me. Let me explain how we are related to each other by sharing some of Dudley’s research with you.
Ship records indicate that John and Ann Hethrington arrived in Quebec City from Ireland via New York City no later than 1819. They soon established a bakery on Rue St. Jean just outside the St Jean Gate in old Quebec City. John and Ann had three boys, John, James and Thomas. John Hethrington Jr. moved to Richmond County in the Eastern Townships of Quebec in 1840. John and his wife Eliza (n. Wickens)’s eldest son Samuel was born in 1841. John was Mayor of Richmond from 1868 to 1872 and lived the life of a successful merchant farmer. Sam married Kate Gorrie of Terrebonne, Quebec who was the daughter of Alexander Gorrie, Queen’s Registrar for North America. Sam and Kate opened a successful merchant’s store and post office in Richmond. Their eldest son John Arthur was born in 1867 and his sister Charlotte was born two years later.
John Arthur Hethrington married Edith Pew whose father EAC Pew was Canada’s first home grown Secret Agent. Their oldest son Hagar Hethrington was my grandfather. Hagar’s youngest brother was my Great Uncle Arthur Hethrington.
Charlotte Hethrington married Dr. Alfred Wade in 1891. Their daughter Charlotte Dorothy Wade was born in 1894. She married Roderick Ferguson Fraser in 1933. Their son Dudley Archibald Fraser was born July 30, 1940.
My Great Uncle Arthur and Dudley’s mother Charlotte were first cousins.
When I asked Uncle Arthur for help in researching our family history he immediately spoke of our cousin Dudley Fraser. My Father John W. Hethrington and I had the great pleasure of visiting Melbourne, Quebec and staying with Dudley in 2020 and 2021. Dudley proudly shared his meticulously detailed book “A Hethrington Genealogy, 1790-2000” with us. We sat up late several evenings laughing and sharing stories. Dudley was very proud of our family’s history and its future.
My feeling is that Dudley was defined by his passion for research and his willingness to share it with others. We all owe an immeasurable debt to Dudley for preserving our family history for us.
Dudley’s passing was a shock. My deepest sympathies go out to his immediate family. Dudley will be missed with great sorrow but his legacy will live on.
Sincerely
John Douglas Hethrington

Words don't describe my sadness at hearing about Dudley's passing. My memories go back to the early 1970's when I was in Cubs and Dudley was my pack leader. Fast forward a couple of years and I joined the Demolay for boys. The Fraser family were very active in the Masonic youth organizations both Demolay and Rainbow for Girls. That's where Danny met Wendy.
For part of my youth the Fraser household was my 2nd home. Boy the laughs we had. I still have those 8mm films!
May The Great Architect of the Universe bless the Frasers and give them the strength to get through this difficult time.
