Obituary of Barbara Stewart
Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
(nee Burton)
The family of Barbara Joyce Stewart of Arnprior are devastated to announce her death on Thursday September 9, 2021. Born in Arnprior on May 13, 1938, Barbara grew up in Braeside, the only child of Susan Burton (née McLean) and Clifford Burton, eventually attending business school and working in accounting for Hydro. Barbara married Erwin Stewart of Braeside, who predeceased her on February 27, 2016. Barbara was the centre of the Stewart family, always putting her needs after those of her children’s: Catherine, Jeffrey (Gina), Brett (Angela) and Rhonda (Mark) who predeceased her on October 4, 2012. Barbara had six grandchildren (Chance, Caitlin and Cassandra; Jessica; Ethan and Liam), two step-grandchildren (Holly and Joycelyn) and four great-grandchildren (Megan, Aiden, Connor and Caiden). Barbara enjoyed years of travel with Erwin as their family grew and he worked in the Navy, living in Moncton and Churchill before settling in Ashton where they ran the Ashton General Store and were Postmaster for 11 years. They moved to Corkery Road in West Carleton and Barbara worked in accounting at Sadler’s Hardware in Almonte. Upon retirement to Arnprior, Barbara was active as a volunteer at the “Opportunity Shop” which fundraises for the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital, and at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed a vibrant social life with a wonderful group of friends, in her condominium neighbourhood and beyond, loving to sit with “the girls” outside, keeping up to date with the family’s large circle of harness racing friends, being an active card player and taking many bus trips and a cruise with Erwin and close friends Sandra and Johnny Love. When left behind, Erwin was known to frequently complain that Barbara was “running the roads"! In recent years, Barbara continued her volunteer and social activities and cruising, and most recently attended social occasions, musical events and played cards with her special friend Howie Robbins. Barbara’s family would like to thank Dr. Jennifer Rivington for her long-time attentive care of Barbara, and the staff of the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice for their expert and kind care over the past several weeks. Barbara’s arrangements have been entrusted to the Boyce Funeral Home Ltd., 138 Daniel Street North, Arnprior. A Celebration of her life will be held Thursday September 16, 2021 at the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Arnprior at 11:00 a.m. Interment Arnprior Albert Street Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends and family are invited to send a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Ruddy Shenkman Hospice in Kanata or the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Arnprior.
