To Hyacinth's family...I just read, with surprise and sorrow, of the passing of Hyacinth in UNB's Alumni news.
I met Hyacinth and Gene in 1962-63 while also at UNB, and all three of us ended up in Wolfville on staff at Acadia University.
Hyacinth, a great field hockey player was my assistant coach. I spent many hours at the Chatterton home.
Hyacinth was also a great seamstress and I bought a sewing machine and she taught me how to sew and make a dress. Hyacinth made all the kid's clothes at that time.
Unfortunately, after leaving Acadia and lost track. Years passed bye and we seemed to lose track of one another but managed to track her down and had a very long and nice telephone conversation which brought us up to date. Hyacinth was very excited as she was about to embark on a cruise where she was to teach line dancing.
So I was taken back by reading the UNB Alumni Magazine. My most sincere condolences and heart felt prayers go out to Hyacinth's family and friends.

It is with sadness that we have learned about the passing of long time teacher & friend, Hyacinth Chatterton.
Most recently, Hyacinth was a retired teacher from Holy Name of Mary School in Almonte where she taught French for many years. Hyacinth was also president of the Almonte Tennis Club & loved to teach both students & adults the grand old game. Hyacinth also sponsored a French studies award for Notre Dame graduates. Our sincere sympathy goes out to Hyacinth's family. Hyacinth was a wonderful, caring teacher who will be missed by many people. We will keep Hyacinth in our thoughts & prayers.
Sincerely,

Message from John and Linnea Wincze Via Email:
Dear Hyacinth, you were the kindest, smartest, most gracious person I have ever met. I remember the first time I met you when you moved next door to us in Nova Scotia. Our families got along so well and we shared many happy times together. You moved away first but we still managed to get together frequently until we moved back to the states and then not so much.
We will never forget your generosity and kindness when you loaned us your car to drive back to the US while ours was being repaired in Canada. You then drove our repaired car to the US to meet us and stay with us in Barrington. You then returned to Canada in your loaned car. True friendship and love.
I remember the shower you gave me for my third child, I remember playing tennis with you, I remember laughing with you whenever we got together.
My life was made richer by your friendship.
We will always love you and treasure your memory.
John and Linnea Wincze

We will miss you deeply!

Hyacinth:
A woman who was as lovely as the flower "HYACINTH". She had a broad smile with a twinkle in her eyes, always groomed with her signature nail polish which she wore proudly. Whatever she did, was done with such grace and class. I took particular interest of her diction and her knowledge, hence, we clicked almost immediately. Although an educator, she had never flaunted her status or made one seemed inferior. By no means however, was she afraid to correct with such love and kindness.
In our small community, Hyacinth was instrumental in putting together a winter tea party once a month, of which she said "to break up the monotony of the wretched winter". It sounded like a plan to me, of which I looked forward to. Her tea parties were full of laughter, chatter and line dancing. She was the kind of hostess that actually used her fine china cups and saucers, as she gave us the history from which they came. After our tea party, furniture were pushed aside so that the line dancers could perform. In my head, I would fanaticize that they were dancing for an audience of one, ME! As I recalled a few years ago, I got a phone call from Hyacinth inviting me to watch an outdoor performance in her drive way. Did I mention that it was the end of winter? which to me was WINTER. She had one of her "brilliant" ideas to perform on her driveway. At the time I remembered thinking that she had gone bunkers. My husband and I sat in our open garage to see the "show" which never happened. Afterall, if I had told him the story of seniors outside line dancing, he would not have believed me. We waited for what seemed like fifteen minutes, at which point I realized that something was amissed. As I jetted over to Hyacinth's I realized that the electrical outlet on her front porch was malfunctioned, hence, plans were changed. The ladies seemed genuinely disappointed, however, although I was "present" in support of them, if truth be told, I was glad. Sitting in my garage in the cold, was not my idea of fun. In Hyacinth warm house, that is where my fun began. Over the years, she had introduced me to some of the finest ladies. I won't say that I remember all of the names, or will recognize all, as Hyacinth was the glue that bound us together. Whenever I looked into my very own China cabinet and see my dainty little china cups and saucers, I will always remember the very petite lady and her "crazy" idea of wanting to line dance in her driveway, as her catch phase was, "BREAKING UP THE MONOTONY OF WINTER" . As I write this tribute I am smiling gleefully, with pleasant memories of the beautiful woman I have gotten to know. Hyacinth the woman, Hyacinth the flower. RIP my friend! Sharon and Wesley Bryan..

I am so sorry to hear of Hyacinth's passing. She was my friend throughout the years after we met while while teaching at St. Mary's in Carleton Place. She was a mentor and an outstanding organizer.
Hyacinth loved to connect people together. She was a wonderful hostess and also great at organizing lunch dates with friends.
I later took line dancing lessons from her and loved it!
Hyacinth had more energy than anyone I know! She used to say that she told her daughters that there were 168 hours in the week and you should make the best of them!
Truly a lovely lady. I will miss her.
My sincere sympathies to all the family.

HYACINTH
Hyacinth-a leader, a great teacher by far
At one point she purchased a sporty red car.
Hyacinth danced and sang-a tennis pro to play
She was a great mentor-so patient with always a positive word to say.
Hyacinth was full of life-always listened with care
Whether it was happy or sad-she had good advice to share.
We will miss her beautiful smile- her great zest for living,
She always made time- she was always giving.
Something Hyacinth might say!
DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND CRY
I AM NOT THERE- I DID NOT DIE.
AND SO HYACINTH-IT’S TIME TO RELEASE
MAY YOU HYACINTH-REST IN PEACE!

Sincere condolences to your family on the loss of dear "Hy-C". I always think of Hyacinth as one of my favourite people. Her positive energy and bright outlook on life always raised everyone's spirits here at the Nick Smith Centre. It was always such a great pleasure to text with her about planning a new line dancing program and to try to figure out her unique combination of emojis and clever abbreviations, mixed in with a few french phrases. I've never met anyone like her and I don't think I ever will. Hyacinth will be dearly missed by everyone who had the honour of meeting her. Walk Good dear Hy-C.

"Wherever a beautiful soul has been there is a trail of beautiful memories".
Never a truer statement to use for the passing of Hyacinth - she was one of the most beautiful souls I had the privilege of meeting, getting to know, and working alongside for various fundraising events at ABMSH. Her smile and carrying personality were infectious. One would never know she was in her 70's and 80's the way she moved across the floor during one of her many line dancing events - always ready, along with her dancing buddies - to share in the joy of music and dance
My prayers, condolences, and all memories shared are with Hyacinth's family and friends.
RIP Beautiful Soul xoxo
