Obituary of Anthony Francis Burger

Please share a memory of Anthony to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Burger, Anthony Francis October 1, 1944 - January 9, 2016 Tony died peacefully at home after a long and difficult struggle with cancer, his beloved wife and son at his side. Tony’s philosophy to leave a positive legacy was amply fulfilled. His career with Foreign Affairs included 7 postings abroad, including as Consul General of Canada in Hong Kong, and a hiatus as Director for Canada, the Netherlands and the Nordic countries at the Asian Development Bank in Manila. Tony rose to positions of increasing seniority in Ottawa, including as Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet (Global Affairs) at the Privy Council Office, and as Chief Economist at Foreign Affairs. Invariably placing others above himself, he retired and supported his wife when she was posted to New Zealand. Happily he was able to enjoy most of his eight years in retirement, especially a 6-month trip to Australia and India after leaving New Zealand, returning to Europe through the Suez Canal on a container ship. The family’s move to the country on the Ottawa River brought a new chapter, new interests and much happiness to their lives. All who knew Tony, loved and respected him for his thoughtfulness, ingenuity in resolving problems, his wry sense of humour and optimism. He was particularly skilled at bringing out the best in others. Tony was also deeply religious and supported his local church and Ottawa charities. Bereft immediate family include his wife, Pamela Deacon, son, Philip, and Pamela’s siblings, John in Toronto, David in California, and Nadine in Aurora, their spouses, Lesia, Olive and Don, and their children. Pamela’s cousins are also grieving. A Celebration of Tony’s Life will be held at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, 125 MacKay St. in New Edinburgh on Friday, January 22 at 1:00 pm, followed by a reception in the church hall, and preceded by a private family burial at Beechwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
