Dear Kim & Peter and family and all the Hughes' and extended families and friends,
It was a true honour to have known your Dad. Through many family get togethers, Christmas Eve at Kim and Peters, Christmas Breakfast at our place, bible study and many services throughout the years. I have never heard a man to deliver a sermon, or a eulogy, and even just a simple prayer like Rev. Hughes. He struck you right down to the core each time he opened his mouth in prayer. I was always anxious to hear his Nov 11th "Remembrance Day Prayer/Sermon" down at the Cenotaph at the Arnprior Hospital. The stories, the memories, the tribute to our soldiers and their families sent a message to all, just how precious life is and what they gave up for all of us. Though he spoke God's word and praised his name always, he wasn't about to miss a little laugh, a joke or just plain fun. I remember he laughed at me and admired my "Red Christmas Balls" that I had in my ears as earrings. He thought that was so funny. I said "No worries Rev Hughes, I can get you a pair too". I went over to our Christmas tree at Seniors at Home, and put some nice red Christmas balls as earrings on him too! He laughed hard and said "He just loved them!" Any time I heard that Rev Hughes was going to do a sermon or something - I didn't want to miss it - because he could connect me with God in the way he spoke. He was a God send to us, and I will never forget him. Besides being a great Father, Grandfather, husband, son, brother etc etc, he could surely sell anything at all. I know he got me every year with a Christmas Cake, or little yellow rubber ducky, any other raffle he was raising money for. He was a magnet for all that is good in our Community. He was a beacon of hope and a light in everyone's day. God's speed my dear Rev Hughes. If anyone ever deserved to be in heaven it is you. I bet you're dancing with your gal Margaret right now and looking down on all of us saying "Wanna buy a ticket?" with his cheeky little grin. See you later our dear friend. Big Hugs. Nancy and Tex and family.

It is with great sadness to learn of the passing of Reverend Hughes. A gentleman who has been a role model to me for over 50 years.
He conducted funerals of my Grandparents, attended visitations for my father and mother and blessed my wife and I by be part of our marriage. When we were arranging wedding there was no question he would be part of the day and blessed us.
He also gave me the great privilege to speak at the Arnprior Church about our mission trip to the country of Angola in early 1992.
He and Margaret would often visit me at McDonald Restaurants in Bells Corners near Ottawa when i worked there when they were in Ottawa.
Reverend Hughes was a man of God who I so appreciated and admired at all times. He blessed myself, my wife Chery, my Sister and our family over many years.
Our thoughts and prayers to the family as he is now at home with his wonderful wife. Love and Blessings, Don and Cheryl Roe

I was young teenager 14/15 when I first met Leo. He was young preacher at St Columba Presbyterian. Church in Kirkhilll. I have so many good memories of him while he was there! He took a great interest in organizing the youth in the area and one Saturday got us all together to Paint the steel fence at the church. I think there was more paint on each other than on the fence when we were done! One time in youth Bible Study I asked him what curcumcision meant. ( must have been Christmas)
He hummed and he hawed and skirted around the question until finally he said, “ Go home and ask your mother.” I reminded him about that in one of our last visits to Arnprior.
Leo led me to the Lord when I was 15 and I am forever indebted to him for that!! He was such a good mentor and we always keep in touch regardless as to his location. In 1965 he and the family came home from Rosetown to marry my husband and I. He must have done it well as the knot is still tied.
Leo and Margaret were such wonderful friends!
Watching them with Colin, Tom
and Murray on Sunday mornings Was sometimes a hoot… but a good hoot!
The last time my sister Jeanie and I went to visit him in Arnprior I reminded him of the time when my grandma was on her deathbed and he asked how old she was. I said 92. My goodness he said, “ what on earth is she waiting for , the old age pension”
I was not impressed at the time but we laughed about it since.
of all the preachers, I have heard, mentors I have had, and important figures in my life, Leo , you were the best. I am sure you have received your crowns and have heard. “ Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
See you on the other side and maybe we can find a fence to paint!

We were teenagers when Leo came to Kirk Hill as a student minister while he was attending Presbyterian College. What a great leader for the youth and young ones in Sunday School. I believe he may have started the birthday jar where you brought the number of pennies equal to your age. I expect it went to a mission somewhere. He taught us many choruses which we still know today. A game he played during Sunday School was to see who could find a Bible verse first. A great way to learn the Books of the Bible.
The most touching memory I have is the night that Leo was ordained. He was on his knees and the ministers from the area stood around him and placed their hands on his head.
The congregation was so happy to have him take part in our 200th anniversary in 2019.

Rev Hughes was always kind to me. Always smiled at me. Came to visit my grandma, Ethel Thomlison, my aunt, Mary Sweet, and once in a while, he even came to visit my dad. My dad didn't claim to be super religious, and sometimes he didn't like pastoral visitation, but he never minded when he crossed paths with Rev Hughes. He liked him. Thank you, Leo, for your service, your encouragement, your sermons and your down-to-earth humanity. See you in Heaven where... you are likely visiting all those people again as they all made it there before you. Condolences to all of the family. I'm so sorry for your grief. My sincere condolences to the family of Rev. Leo. He married me and my late husband David in Nov 1974. He and Margaret were close friends of my parents Bill and Hannah Braidwood - the four of them having many a shopping trip in Ottawa They spent New Years Eve with my parents along with a couple more Scottish friends. When my sister Retta and her husband and children (who just happened to live in Aberdeen) came to visit family here in Arnprior it just happened to be the same time Leo and Margaret were visiting family in Aberdeen so Leo and my brother in law Des just exchanged their vehicles for their holidays. Yes we were true Scots. I will miss him as he always had a story for me of something that happened with our family.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
