Obituary of Robert Alfred "Bob" Nugent
Robert Alfred Nugent
February 14, 1927 - March 6, 2025
Bob was born in Thetford Mines, Quebec and spent his early years in the Eastern Townships.
He worked at various jobs until settling on the lumber industry and moved to Lennoxville (Sherbrooke). Bob and Truth had an active life in Lennoxville and while starting to raise their family, were very active in the community and, particularly, the curling club. Bob’s rink competed across the province (and beyond), and in two separate years, his curling rink won the Governor General’s trophy. The family then moved to Lac Megantic, and on to Orillia, Ontario.
In 1967, Bob and his family relocated to Arnprior where he became production manager at Gillies and on to Consolidated Bathurst when that company bought the Gillies mill. He had an engineering bent and was responsible for 14 sawmills in Ontario and Quebec. One of his greatest professional accomplishments was the design and construction of the new Gillies mill (“White Pine College”) after a fire in 1976 destroyed the old mill. He remained as general manager of the Gillies mill for several years, until his retirement.
Bob’s avocation was woodworking; he was a talented and meticulous finishing carpenter and wood turner. Many of his tables, bowls and lamps grace the homes of friends and relatives.
Bob loved children, and his grandchildren and great grandchildren brought him joy. He was a favourite of many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his wife Truth (ne Hamilton), son Chris, and daughter Jennifer (Kent Kirkpatrick) and survived by his daughters Laurel, Paula (Mickey Sarazin) and Rosemary Nugent (Chris Leppan), as well as three granddaughters, Meaghan (Chris), Heather, and Ashley (Chad) and five great grandchildren.
Final care has been entrusted to the Boyce Funeral Home Ltd., 138 Daniel Street N., Arnprior. A tribute will be held at a later date at Maple Leaf Cemetery in Quebec’s Eastern Townships. Donations in his memory may be made to Grace St. Andrews United Church (www.gsachurch.ca) Click Here.
